The Region
In the region of Pallars Jussà, the castle of Mur is surrounded by lands that make it special; time ago, they were the frontier between the Arab and Christian worlds. On one side, the one that had been Muslim territory, we have the mountain range of Monsec. Lleida, Àger… On the other, there is the Christian territory, the Conca de Tremp and the Pyrenees.
Under the shelter of the fortresses of the Castle of Mur and the Castle of Guàrdia, the town was born in a time where the constant fighting compelled to fortify these little population centres in order to offer security to their inhabitants. Along the history, the municipality where the Castle of Mur is located has received many names. After the annexation of Guardia de Noguera into Mur in the year 1972, the official name of the municipality turned to be Castillo de Mur.
The municipality spreads out over the valley that is on the mountain range of Montsec, between the Noguera Pallaresa and the Noguera Ribagorçana. Celler is the main town centre and it is located at the west side of the marsh of Terradets. Upper and always at the west side of the Noguera Pallaresa, there are Guàrdia de Tremp, Santa Llúcia de Mur, Collmorter, Vilamolat de Mur and Meüll.
From Tremp it is possible to access the population centres that constitute the municipality, taking the regional road C-147 on the direction of Balaguer. This road turns into local when it gets to the marsh of Terradets. On the same road one gets to Celler. The rest of the town centres are located on the deviation to the west that comes out from the road. From the road one gets to the town centres taking mountain roads. For example, Meüll is located nearer Fígols de Tremp (on the road C-1311 of Tremp in the direction of Aragon) than Cellers. Near Cellers there is a train station where the line of the Pobla passes through.
